Historically known as a college town, Tempe is now diversifying and really coming into its own. It was recently ranked one of the top 20 places to live for people in their 20’s and 30’s and a growing number of retirees are calling this desert oasis home, too – so there must be something to it!
Located only 20 minutes from Downtown Phoenix and Old Town Scottsdale, Tempe may be considered part of the ‘East’ valley but it actually doesn’t get any more centrally located than this. Also bordered by Gilbert, Chandler, and Mesa, Tempe offers its residents one of the most flexible living arrangements you could ever hope to find. In a single day, you can go from visiting family in the suburbs, to catching a show or game in Phoenix, to enjoying dinner at a country club in Scottsdale. You may even have time to squeeze in some boutique shopping at one of the countless nearby shopping centers!
Homes and neighborhoods in Tempe perfectly capture the artistic nature of this colorful state. Many of the neighborhoods feature lush green lawns, large trees, and well-established foliage as well as colorful yards full of homemade projects and distinct artistic touches. Electrical boxes around town are skillfully painted and the neighborhoods mostly feature timeless ranch-style homes giving the area a classic Arizona touch with a little splash of color.
Tempe also offers unique transportation options, considering it sits’ in the middle of the desert! Most Arizona cities aren’t very cyclist friendly, for example, but Tempe stands out with over 175-miles of bikeways. Thousands of residents cycle to work and school at Arizona State University as well as up and down the hub of Mill Ave. Tempe’s Metro Light Rail system is also a favorite form of transportation and part of what’s drawing the millennials – a crowd known for looking for alternative solutions. Thousands of commuters opt for the light rail to get to work, giving Tempe’s highways and roads a break. The Arizona State University campus in the heart of Tempe is also home to the free Orbit Shuttles that can take you around the neighborhoods that weave their way through the expansive campus.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Tempe doesn’t disappoint. Tempe Town Lake is located right at the heart of Tempe. It passes right by the main ASU Tempe campus and is literally within walking distance of Downtown. Here, residents and visitors alike can explore the beautiful lake on a paddleboard, kayak, pontoon boat, and more. The trout, bass, catfish, and sunfish are continuously stock year-round, and the 5+ miles of paved paths around the lake are a favorite way to take a stroll, go for a run, or ride your bike while taking in the views of one of the areas only sources of water. It truly is an oasis!
